Who created the Pomodoro Technique and why?
The Pomodoro Technique is a time-management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a timer to break down work or study into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. These intervals are named "Pomodoro", the word in Italian for tomatoes.
The funny name comes from a tomato-shaped timer used in Italy in the 1980s.
Cirillo invented the Pomodoro Technique over 30 years ago, when he was at university, to focus on his studies. After graduating, he used the technique to help his employees track their time and get more work done.
The technique is very simple and is an effective way to focus on any type of task. That's why it received much attention since its publication in 1992.
How does the Pomodoro Timer Technique works?
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that uses a timer to break down work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks.
It is a straightforward approach to focus on your tasks so you can get more things done in a day. All you need is a way to write down a to-do list, like the Task Manager in our Pomodoro Timer Online, and a timer with adjustable time lengths.
The Pomodoro Workflow
Once you're set up, you can start the process! It's important to notice that all numbers below are just a suggestion and you need to find the ones that best fit your schedule and ability to focus.
In his book, Cirillo suggests a time box of 2 hours, divided into work and breaks:
- The first interval is the Pomodoro and is normally set to 25 minutes. During a Pomodoro, you must stay focused on a single task and avoid any kind of interruption.
- The second interval is the Short break . After each interval of Pomodoros, you take a short break (usually around 5 minutes). During breaks, you should avoid doing any activity that requires heavy brain effort.
- Repeat the previous 2 steps up to 4 times.
- The last step is to take a Long break (15 to 30 minutes) before restarting the Technique.
Again, these numbers are suggestions and you can change them to any amount of time or iterations! That's why a custom timer like this tool comes in handy.
Is Pomodoro worth it?
The Pomodoro Method is a great way to be more productive and helps people who have problems focusing on a single task for long periods.

That's why we recommend you avoid using social media and turn off all notifications from your mobile phone and computer, checking on them only during a long or short break.
If that doesn't work, make sure to take notes on every distraction. Then take a moment to reflect on each of these, and think about ways to avoid them in the future.
