  • Icebreaker (optional)

The Stand-Up Meeting is one of the most important tools in Agile. They are broadly used to ensure every teammate is in line with the project's goal and its development.

It's a common practice to hold these meetings first thing in the morning. That's where Icebreakers come in handy since they can get the conversation started. Also, since answers to icebreakers tend to be short, it helps to set the rhythm for the meeting.

But be careful. Since Stand-Ups need to be quick, icebreakers can be a deal breaker depending on the size of your team, or the average duration of statuses.

  • Work completed

The first of the three questions asked in a Stand-Up Meeting is: "What did you do yesterday?". There are many variations for this question, and they are meant to ask about previous progress in everyone's obligations.

It is a simple way to let everyone know which tasks were finished. It can also clarify when tasks are too extensive and should be split into smaller ones.

  • Work for today

The next question is: "What are you doing today?". There are also plenty of ways to ask the same thing, all asking for the current work plan that each one has in mind.

When everyone has given good answers to this question, it's way easier, as an example, for the leadership to decide the best timing for a meeting, or for teammates to know how and when they can be helpful to each other's tasks.

  • Progress blockers

The last, but maybe the most relevant question is "Is there anything blocking your progress?". The goal of asking this question is to make everyone talk about their challenges, struggles, and productivity killers.

There's an attention point during this block, because most colleagues may feel tempted to give advice, to correct each other, or to describe a whole new way to approach problems that came up. But remember, the Stand-Up Meeting needs to be short (15 minutes at most), so you need to ensure that these conversations happen in another moment, involving only those interested.
