What is WSJF (Weighted Shortest Job First)?

Weighted Shortest Job First is a prioritization technique used in Agile and SAFe frameworks. It helps teams determine which features or tasks will provide the best "bang for your buck" by calculating a score based on the cost of delay divided by job size.

The WSJF Formula:

WSJF = (Business Value + Time Criticality + Risk/Opportunity) ÷ Job Size

How to Score Each Factor:

  • Business Value: How much business value will this deliver? (1-10 scale)
  • Time Criticality: How time-sensitive is this work? (1-10 scale)
  • Risk/Opportunity: What risks does this mitigate or opportunities does it enable? (1-10 scale)
  • Job Size: How much effort/time will this take? (1-10 scale)

Higher WSJF scores indicate higher priority. Tasks with the highest WSJF scores should be worked on first as they provide the maximum economic benefit.

How to Use This WSJF Calculator

  1. Enter your task or feature name in the "Task" column
  2. Rate each factor on a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being the highest)
  3. The WSJF score is automatically calculated using the formula
  4. Sort your tasks by WSJF score to determine priority order
  5. Work on tasks with the highest WSJF scores first
  6. Use the "+ Add row" button to add more tasks
  7. Click the × button to remove tasks you no longer need

Tips for Better WSJF Scoring:

  • Use relative scoring - compare tasks against each other
  • Involve your team in the scoring process for better accuracy
  • Review and update scores regularly as priorities change
  • Focus on the cost of delay rather than absolute business value
