What is RICE (Reach, Impact, Confidence, Effort)?

RICE is a prioritization framework developed by Intercom to help product teams prioritize features and initiatives. It provides a systematic way to evaluate competing ideas based on four key factors.

The RICE Formula:

RICE = (Reach × Impact × Confidence) ÷ Effort

How to Score Each Factor:

  • Reach: How many people will be affected? (number of users/customers per time period)
  • Impact: How much impact will this have per person? (3 = massive, 2 = high, 1 = medium, 0.5 = low, 0.25 = minimal)
  • Confidence: How confident are you in your estimates? (10-100% scale)
  • Effort: How much time will this take? (person-weeks or story points)

Higher RICE scores indicate higher priority. Features with the highest RICE scores should be worked on first as they provide the maximum impact for the least effort.

How to Use This RICE Calculator

  1. Enter your feature or initiative name in the first column
  2. Reach: Estimate how many people will be affected (e.g., 1000 users per month)
  3. Impact: Rate the impact per person (1-3 scale, can use 0.5 and 0.25 for lower impact)
  4. Confidence: Enter your confidence level as a percentage (10-100%)
  5. Effort: Estimate the effort in person-weeks or story points
  6. The RICE score is automatically calculated using the formula
  7. Sort your features by RICE score to determine priority order

Tips for Better RICE Scoring:

  • Be realistic with your reach estimates - use actual data when possible
  • Impact scores: 3 = massive, 2 = high, 1 = medium, 0.5 = low, 0.25 = minimal
  • Lower confidence scores for uncertain features (around 50%)
  • Include all effort: development, design, testing, deployment
  • Review and update scores as you learn more
