What is ICE (Impact, Confidence, Ease)?

ICE is a simple prioritization framework that helps teams quickly score and rank ideas, features, or experiments. It's particularly popular in growth hacking and product management for its simplicity and speed of evaluation.

The ICE Formula:

ICE = (Impact + Confidence + Ease) ÷ 3

How to Score Each Factor (1-10 scale):

  • Impact: How much positive effect will this have on your key metric? (10 = massive impact, 1 = minimal impact)
  • Confidence: How confident are you that this will have the expected impact? (10 = very confident, 1 = not confident)
  • Ease: How easy is this to implement? (10 = very easy, 1 = very difficult)

Higher ICE scores indicate higher priority. Ideas with the highest ICE scores should be tested or implemented first as they provide the best balance of impact, confidence, and ease.

How to Use This ICE Calculator

  1. Enter your idea, feature, or experiment name in the first column
  2. Impact: Rate the potential positive effect on your key metric (1-10)
  3. Confidence: Rate how confident you are in the expected outcome (1-10)
  4. Ease: Rate how easy this is to implement (1-10, where 10 is very easy)
  5. The ICE score is automatically calculated as the average of all three factors
  6. Sort your ideas by ICE score to determine priority order
  7. Focus on high-scoring ideas first for maximum return on investment

When to Use ICE vs Other Frameworks:

  • ICE: Quick decisions, early-stage ideas, growth experiments
  • RICE: When you need more detailed analysis with reach data
  • WSJF: When working with complex features in Agile/SAFe environments

Tips for Better ICE Scoring:

  • Focus on one key metric when scoring impact
  • Be honest about confidence - uncertainty should lower the score
  • Consider technical complexity, resources, and dependencies for ease
  • Score relative to other items in your list
  • Review and update scores as you learn more
