The Matrix Retrospective Retrospective

What is this activity?

This technique uses a futuristic, cyberpunk-inspired board modeled after the Matrix aesthetic to bring a fresh, engaging twist to standard retrospectives. It breaks down the review into four tech-themed columns: System Glitches (What didn’t go well) System Strengths (What went well) Code Patches (Fixes/improvements made) Next Launch (Ideas for next sprint) It’s designed to spark curiosity and creativity, especially for dev teams that enjoy sci-fi or tech culture.

How to conduct this activity

Start by presenting the board with its four columns: System Glitches, System Strengths, Code Patches, and Next Launch. Set the tone with a fun intro (maybe even some Matrix music or visuals). Ask team members to add cards to each column based on their reflections. Allow time for discussion and clustering of similar cards. Prioritize action items from the “Next Launch” column and assign owners. Encourage candid sharing while keeping the mood light. This format works well to break routine and energize tech-savvy teams.
