Plus, Minus, Interesting (PMI) Futurespective Retrospective

What is this activity?

The PMI Futurespective is a simple tool that helps teams look at a project, idea, or upcoming change from three angles: positive, negative, and curious. Instead of jumping to quick opinions, it encourages people to think in a broader way. This method was inspired by creative problem-solving techniques and works well when you want to explore different possibilities without judgment. For example, if your team is starting a new deployment process, you can use PMI to discuss the benefits (like faster delivery), the risks (such as extra costs or confusion), and the things you’re curious about (like how it might improve collaboration). This approach makes sure every voice is heard and helps teams prepare for what’s ahead.

How to conduct this activity

Start by sharing the topic you want the team to reflect on, such as a new project, change, or upcoming sprint. Ask everyone to add their thoughts into the three columns: Plus, Minus, and Interesting. To get the best results, give people a few minutes to think on their own before sharing. Remind them there are no wrong answers—it’s about exploring possibilities. As facilitator, guide the group to look for patterns, discuss the most important points, and agree on actions if needed. Tip: Keep the session light and open. Encourage curiosity and remind everyone that the “interesting” column is just as valuable as the pluses and minuses. By the end, the team will have a clearer picture of both opportunities and challenges, and they’ll feel more prepared for what’s ahead.
