PI Planning Retrospective Retrospective

What is this activity?

The PI Planning Retrospective is a short but very important activity done at the end of PI Planning. Instead of focusing on team tasks or program increments, this session is only about the planning event itself. The goal is to reflect on how the planning was organized, spot what worked well, and note what can be improved for next time. This type of retrospective is often led by the Release Train Engineer (RTE). It helps the group share feedback about logistics (like tools, food, location, or online setup) and the preparation process. For example, maybe the meeting rooms were too small, or the online tool was confusing. By collecting these insights, teams can make the next PI Planning smoother and more effective.

How to conduct this activity

The facilitator (usually the RTE) should start by creating an EasyRetro board with clear categories for feedback. It’s good practice to encourage people to share notes during the whole PI Planning event, not just at the end. When the retrospective starts, give the group 15–20 minutes to add their cards into the board. Ask everyone to reflect on what went well, what could have been better, and what needs improvement. You can also include a column to thank teammates who went the extra mile. Once cards are added, review them together, group similar ideas, and have a short discussion. At the end, agree on concrete action items and assign responsibility for follow-up before the next PI Planning.
